A gaming setup can feel slow for more than one reason. Frame rate describes the game’s rendered output, refresh rate describes the display and ping describes a network round trip. Keeping these measurements separate helps you choose a useful test instead of lowering every setting after a difficult match.
FPS describes rendered frames
Frames per second, usually shortened to FPS, is the rate at which the game renders frames. A frame-rate counter can help reveal whether a demanding scene runs differently from a quiet one. A high average number may still hide uneven frame delivery.
Compare the same area or sequence when testing settings. If you change resolution or a graphics option, record the effect before changing something else. Choose a result that remains comfortable during the actual activity, not only in an empty menu.
Refresh rate describes the display
Refresh rate is measured in hertz and describes how often the display refreshes its image. Microsoft uses 60 Hz as an example of a display refreshing sixty times per second. It is a display setting and capability, rather than a promise that a game will render that many frames.
On Windows, Microsoft directs users to the Advanced display settings to see supported rates. Check the intended monitor when you use more than one. Available options depend on the display and configuration; do not assume the highest number printed on a product box is currently active.
Ping describes a network round trip
Ping is commonly used for the time taken for data to travel to a destination and back. EA’s connection-quality explanation for FC also distinguishes packet loss and jitter: missing data and variation in ping over time. These concepts help explain why one low ping reading does not describe every moment of a session.
Use the network information provided by the game when available. Its destination and measurement can differ from a general internet speed test. Lowering graphical detail does not directly shorten the route to a game server.
Match the test to the symptom
For choppy rendering, compare frame delivery under the same scene and graphics settings. For delayed online actions, inspect the connection information and whether the problem affects other online activity. A problem can involve both, so keep observations rather than assuming one number explains everything.
- Record the symptom and the place where it happens.
- Change one relevant setting or condition.
- Repeat a comparable short test.
- Keep the change only when the result is useful.
These measurements are tools for comparison. They do not guarantee a win, and a sensible setup is one that makes your own sessions consistent and readable.
